PASSAMAQUODDY INDIAN PROFILE
Nine young men from the Passamaquoddy tribe of northeast Maine volunteered to fight as members of the Maine National Guard the week following President Woodrow Wilson's declaration of war. About half of these young men would die fighting for their country even though they would not be recognized as American citizens until 1924. Among the deaths was the son of the tribal chief who was killed on the last full day of WWI.
