BUFFALO BILL IN AMERICAN WWI UNDERGROUND CITY
Buffalo Bill was an American legend in 1918 when an unknown American soldier from New England's Yankee Division drew this portrait in a large WWI underground city. Buffalo Bill had died in 1917, the year before this was drawn. The Medal of Honor he had won for gallantry as a civilian scout on the Western Frontier had been rescinded in 1913 but he was still a symbol of courage in battle. He was also a Knight Templar and 32nd Degree Freemason. Many young soldiers in the Yankee Division were members of Fraternal organizations including the Freemasons. This drawing is now cloaked in darkness under a rural farm field in Picardy, France. In 1989, Cody's Medal of Honor was restored.
