The battle of Cantigny was the first major test of American troop readiness to fight and win in World War I. This patriotic slogan on the wall of an underground stairway leading from a farm cellar to the surface, was carved by an American soldier from the US First Division. The farm house had been destroyed. But soldiers found shelter underground.
